The Self-Paddling Machine

Patent No.: US 6,293,874 B1
Filed: Jan 4, 2000 · Granted: Sep 25, 2001
Inventor: Joe W. Armstrong (filed as an individual)
Status: Expired — free for anyone to build. Please don't.

What it claims

Officially, it’s a “User-Operated Amusement Apparatus for Kicking the User’s Buttocks.” The user stands on a platform between two posts, bends forward, and turns a hand crank with both hands, which presents the backside toward the second post. That crank drives a set of rotating arms tipped with flexible shoes, which paddle the user’s buttocks for the amusement of the user and any onlookers. The whole thing folds into a self-contained package for storage or shipping. The patent lays this out across 14 claims.

What it actually is

A crank-powered spanking carousel. You turn the handle, the arms spin, and the faster you crank the harder you get paddled: a machine whose entire reason for existing is to let you swat yourself in front of a crowd.

Why, though

The inventor’s complaint with earlier “spanking devices” was efficiency: the old ones delivered a single blow, then had to be reset and the user repositioned before the next one. This apparatus fixes that by inflicting repetitive blows without a reset, with the user controlling the frequency and force via the crank. It’s peak problem-solving energy aimed at a problem nobody raised. The patent office agreed it was new. History does not record anyone asking for a faster spanking.

Verdict: 5 out of 5 bruised volunteers.
